Welcome to the land of Ourania - a place of beastly magic, history and subterfuge recently marred by war and grief. We are a fantasy-driven Canine and Equine play-by-post roleplay game for mature members ages 16 and up, with an emphasis on heavy lore and customizable magics. This compendium is designed to assist in learning all about the site's game mechanics, history, member expectations and more. Before you register an account with us, we urge you to read through the links below over an appropriate period of time in order to get a firm grasp of what we do and how we do it. Magic within Ourania stems from the very power within ourselves. Our Aura - also known as our inner spirit or will - is a series of emotions and skills that can be tapped into once they’ve been discovered. They were once very powerful, so much so that we struck down the old gods and became god-like ourselves, but with the results of the Unfinished War our Auras have diminished into near nonexistence. What power we had left saved us from death at the Rift, but beyond that, we’re now mostly on our own. As we return to Ourania to find ourselves again, it’s clear that the magic has shifted and is now fragmented, lost in the explosion of the War, waiting to be re-discovered.

Discovering & Creating Magic

Unless otherwise stated, all magic is custom on-site; this means that once a member has discovered a magic, it is up to them to create and design that specific power as they see fit.

When a magic is discovered by your character in-game, you must respond to that event as follows:

1. Respond to the event in-character, and maintain posting order.
While maintaining posting order, you will reply to the event to showcase your character's response. Don't worry about not getting the orb - anyone currently in that thread will be able to acquire it!

2. Include the following form at the bottom of your response.
Power Name: The name of the magic you're creating
Slot: Will this be a Primary, Secondary or Tertiary magic?
Description: Tell us what this magic does! Please also include any specific weaknesses it inflicts. Be descriptive!



3. Report the post for review.
Once you’ve posted your response and included the form above, you should then Report that post using the “Report” feature so that the staff team is alerted that it needs attention. Should your power be accepted as-written, you’ll receive a staff response to your post and that magic will be added to your character profile. Should your power not meet site criteria, you’ll be informed of what changes need to be made before final approval occurs.


What happens when my character encounters an Orb in-game? This is largely up to you! Generally, an orb will appear as a wispy ball of colored, floating magic. It's not extremely animated but does have some movement. It might appear out of thin air, or come from a nearby tree or rock, but once it's visible your character can then reach out and touch it, walk through it, or otherwise acknowledge it. Doing so means they will absorb that magic into their bodies.

When creating your custom magic, we ask that you make all attempts to effectively “balance” it. This means a working mixture of “powerful” vs “aesthetic” magics rather than attempting to make the most powerful magic each time you discover an Orb. We want the game to be fair, so this requires you to make efforts to maintain that fairness.

All characters on-site are allowed four (4) Aura Magics at a time:
  • a Primary magic that is your character’s most favored,
  • a Secondary magic,
  • a Tertiary magic, and
  • a Passive enchantment.

    Should your character have a Full Skillset (meaning all magic slots are filled or being used) and they discover a new Orb, they may choose to replace one. Just know, that you cannot retrieve a magic once you’ve removed it, and should your character encounter it again in-character it will no longer be at the same proficiency.*

    *Should you possess enough Runes to spend at the in-game store, you can purchase one of the “CRYSTAL BONES”. Said bone, while in your inventory, can be used to store ONE magic should you wish to remove it from one of your three magic slots, allowing you to keep a singular magic in the wings should your character ever wish to re-wield it in the future.



    Types of Magic

    There are currently six forms of magic that can be discovered or used on-site, with a virtually endless variety of customizations for each:

  • Elemental - Powers that reflect the main elements and all elements in-between: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Shadow, and Light. These can include fire-wielding, ice-wielding, control of plants, etc.
  • Dark Arts - Magic to do with blood, necromancy, poison, and other black magic.
  • Spirit - Spirits and demons, animancy (opposite of necromancy), minor possession, etc.
  • Illusion - Powers with subjective reality, camouflage, dream-walking, etc.
  • Enchantment - Magic to do with emotions, telepathy, beast-mastering, etc.
  • Divine - ULTRA RARE - God-like powers such as shape-shifting, anti-magic (draining), resurrection, energy shields/weapons, etc. Divine magic will be very hard to come by.

    Using Magic

    Magic on Ourania should be coherent, and it should take in-character practice and dedication before your character becomes well-versed in wielding their own magic. There should be no immediate prowess, no matter how many magics your character might already have: each magic is singular and individual, with no two being the same. This means that any new power your character encounters and possesses should be treated with fairness and the understanding that your character must work to become proficient at it.

    Whether your magic is primarily offensive, defensive, or aesthetic, when a character wields magic of any kind there should be appropriate weakness taken into account. Common side effects of wielding magic include, but aren’t limited to: shortness of breath, light-headedness, feeling faint, headaches, joint pains, etc. Side effects can (and sometimes should) affect the magic itself too: sputtering, inconsistencies, backfires and more often play a part, especially if the magic is new to the character.

    Wielding a magic should come with written clarity, while always avoiding powerplay or godmoding. Make your intent clear so that your opponent can respond thusly.

    As a member of Ourania, you are expected to self-manage your own magic usage and maintain consistent fairness when writing your magic. Should you be found skirting the system or consistently over-powering your character, you’re putting your membership on the site at risk. We want the game to be fun for everyone!



    Passive Enchantment

    “Passive Enchantment”, otherwise known as appearance-magic, is any single magic relating to a character’s appearance upon acceptance to the site. This could include, but isn’t limited to: elemental body parts, venomous bites or stings, etc. While Passive Enchantment is welcomed and may be used offensively/defensively by characters as they see fit (adhering to powerplaying & godmoding rules of course), we do ask that this magic be kept well under the member’s control so that the memberbase can put closer focus onto site-earned Aura magic.

    Upon joining the site, your character is allowed 1 (one) Passive Enchantment related to their appearance. It must be present on the character’s current design and follow the terms above.



    Magic Icons

    When your character has discovered a magic and it has been approved, it's time to add that magic to your profile! Rather than confine members to a single-icon system, we instead offer you a wide selection of icons you are free to choose from and use at your discretion to represent your version of your magic. To use, just right-click below and click "Copy Image Address" and paste it into the appropriate Slot in your Edit Profile area.
